Daí surgiu a chamada inicial:
Nota do autor

What Is It, What Is It?
"To live and not be ashamed of being happy
To sing the beauty of being an eternal apprentice
I know that life should be much better, and it will be
But that doesn't stop me from repeating:
It is beautiful, it is beautiful, and it is beautiful..."
This is one of the most beautiful and joyful choruses in our MPB (Brazilian Popular Music). The song "O que é, o que é?" (What Is It, What Is It?) was composed by Gonzaguinha in 1982, and recorded by him that same year under the EMI-Odeon label.
According to the Novabrasil FM website, "Gonzaguinha created the song in a collective partnership with his fans: the artist asked them to write him letters answering the question: 'What is life to you?', and these letters are kept to this day."
Story has it that one of them, written in a child’s handwriting—certainly by a child—answered with things like "Life is riding a bike" and "Life is having an ice cream," and, finally, contained the phrase that served as the foundation for the piece: "In truth, I don't know what life is, I only know that it is beautiful."
Hence the opening lines:
I’ll side with the purity of the children's answer: It is life, it is beautiful, and it is beautiful!
The song’s lyrics mirror the many different facets of what life means to most people. For some, life is loving; for others, suffering. For some, it is joy; for others, a lament. For some, a single drop that doesn't last a second; for others, a divine mystery filled with the most diverse emotions—from euphoria to deep sorrow.
The final part reminds us that "we are the ones who make life, however we can, or must, or want," and even when it seems wrong, we still desire it.
Author's Note
Explaining life is an exercise in reflection and, often, in faith. Some merely exist, while others search for a higher meaning.
Some live the lightness of feeling that life is "riding a bike" or "having an ice cream," enjoying the moments provided to us along this road. Others live through grief, sadness, and the feeling that the end would be the only way out.
This does not necessarily mean the person wants to die; the meaning can be much more complex than one might imagine. Someone who thinks about giving up on life, most of the time, longs for deliverance from unbearable and persistent problems. Above all, these people need someone to just listen to their pain.
Finding someone who listens, without offering magical solutions or moralistic advice, can be the greatest support for those who just need to vent. Speaking about what you feel helps put your thoughts in order. So, listen. Remember that the suffering caused by problems we often know nothing about can drain motivation and, consequently, joy. Just listen!
Nowadays, people are too busy watching short videos or immersed in their daily chores, aren't they? For instance: when was the last time you asked someone how they were doing with genuine interest? And did you stop to reflect on their answer afterward?
Living is also an exercise in empathy, a space where we can share the good things too. To define life is to remember that it is made of cycles: there will be days when we are well and others when we are not—but tomorrow will always bring a chance to restart and try again.
Happiness is not a state of eternal euphoria, but a way of walking in which we learn from both joys and stumbles, confident that "it should be much better, and it will be." After all, the beauty of life lies precisely in this greatness of being an eternal apprentice.
