It perfectly captures the anxieties and idealism of youth, balancing the protagonist's trajectory with the cultural atmosphere of the era.
The Weight of a Promise
The book follows the journey of Eduardo Marciano, a young man from Belo Horizonte who carries a burning desire to become a writer and find an absolute meaning to life. The narrative is split between memories of his childhood and youth in Minas Gerais and his disenchanted adult life in Rio de Janeiro.

Born in Belo Horizonte, Fernando Sabino transformed his life experiences into classics of Brazilian literature. His time in the Cavalry of Juiz de Fora inspired the priceless novel O Grande Mentecapto, but it was in Rio de Janeiro and New York — where he lived and spent time with Vinícius de Moraes — that he consolidated his journalistic career.
In 1956, he reached his peak with The Rendezvous, an existentialist novel that depicts the anxieties of youth and the search for identity.
Beyond being a brilliant writer, Sabino was a man of the world: he covered the Cuban Revolution, served as a Cultural Attaché in London, and founded the prestigious publishing houses Editora do Autor and Editora Sabiá alongside Rubem Braga. His versatility also left a mark on cinema, as he wrote screenplays and founded Bem-Te-Vi Filmes.
