Qual o resumo de uma vida?

Epitáfio.

A canção composta por Sérgio Britto traz a reflexão das coisas que certamente sentimos falta no final de tudo: “Devia ter amado mais, ter chorado mais, ter visto o sol nascer; devia ter complicado menos, trabalhado menos, ter visto o sol se pôr” ou mesmo “ter morrido de amor”.

Afinal, “o acaso vai me proteger, enquanto eu andar distraído” — ou, quem sabe, uma lembrança bíblica involuntária de que “o tempo e o imprevisto ocorrem a todos”.

A canção Epitáfio marca um drama profundo na história do grupo Titãs. Em 2001, o grupo debatia sobre quais músicas deveriam compor o repertório do álbum A Melhor Banda de Todos os Tempos da Última Semana, e esta faixa não estava entre as preferidas da maioria. Um dos poucos que apoiavam fortemente a inclusão da música era o guitarrista e "tranquilizador do grupo", Marcelo Fromer.

Tudo ia bem até que, numa de suas rotinas de exercício físico — uma caminhada/corrida pelas ruas de São Paulo —, o jovem guitarrista foi atingido por uma motocicleta, perdendo a vida precocemente. Por estar sem documentos, ele foi atendido inicialmente como desconhecido, o que dificultou o contato com amigos e familiares. Quando os companheiros de banda finalmente receberam a notícia, um clima devastador de tristeza tomou conta de todos.

Na ocasião do lançamento do álbum, a música parecia combinar perfeitamente (e dolorosamente) com a situação.

Epitáfio significa, literalmente, a inscrição gravada em uma lápide ou túmulo, um último resumo ou homenagem a quem já se foi.

Diante disso, uma das grandes questões que a música nos suscita é: “O que estou esperando para valorizar as pessoas que amo? O que espero para prezar os momentos simples e as pequenas alegrias?”

Tudo o que se espera de uma biografia é que o "descanse em paz" traga em si a certeza de uma história rica em amor, presença, momentos de contemplação e, acima de tudo, uma eterna saudade.

The song composed by Sérgio Britto brings forth a profound reflection on the things we will certainly miss at the very end of everything: “I should have loved more, cried more, watched the sun rise; I should have complicated things less, worked less, watched the sunset” or even “died of love.”

After all, “chance will protect me while I walk distracted” — or perhaps, an involuntary biblical reminder that “time and unexpected events overtake them all.”

The song Epitáfio marks a deep tragedy in the history of the Brazilian rock band Titãs. In 2001, the group was debating which songs should make up the tracklist for their album A Melhor Banda de Todos os Tempos da Última Semana, and this specific track was not among the favorites of most members. One of the few who strongly advocated for the inclusion of the song was their guitarist and the group's "peacemaker," Marcelo Fromer.

Everything was going well until, during one of his routine fitness exercises — a jog through the streets of São Paulo —, the young guitarist was struck by a motorcycle, tragically losing his life. Because he was carrying no identification documents, he was initially treated as an unknown patient, which severely delayed contact with his friends and family. When his bandmates finally received the news, a devastating shroud of grief enveloped the entire group.

Upon the release of the album, the song felt perfectly — and painfully — tailored to the circumstance.

An epitaph means, quite literally, the inscription carved onto a tombstone: a final summary, a parting homage to someone who has passed away.

In light of this, one of the greatest questions the song evokes within us is: “What am I waiting for to cherish the people I love? What am I waiting for to prize the simple moments and the small joys of existence?”

Ultimately, all that is ever expected of a biography is that the phrase "rest in peace" carries within itself the weight of a story rich in love, active presence, moments of quiet contemplation, and above all, an everlasting, beautiful longing.
