A jornada musical de Dhan teve início em meados de 2011, quando assumiu os vocais principais do memorável Projeto Rasta Roots

The waters of the Paraguaçu River tell ancient stories of resistance and art along its bends in Iaçu, Bahia. It is against this backdrop—marked by a strong historical legacy and the daily challenge of retaining young talent amid the exodus to major urban centers—that the voice of Daniel, widely known as Dhan Nascimento, has established itself as one of the region's main soundtracks.
Dhan's musical journey began in mid-2011 when he took over as lead vocalist for the memorable Projeto Rasta Roots. For nearly a decade, the band spread good vibes and rhythmic steps throughout the region, specializing in exquisite renditions of legends such as Bob Marley, Edson Gomes, and Sine Calmon.
"He emanated good energy, overflowed with charisma, and his voice evolved greatly over time," recalls enthusiast Nilson Muller.
The end of the project, brought on by a chronic lack of local support and conflicting schedules, did not silence the artist; on the contrary, it pushed him to reinvent himself.
"Like the waters of the Paraguaçu River during the flood season, the city of Iaçu overflows with new talent just waiting for a window to the world."
In 2019, Dhan Nascimento redefined his identity by diving into the musicality of Arrocha Sertanejo. The release of his first studio album, "Pra falar de amor" ("To Talk About Love"), recorded in Itaberaba, marked the beginning of a prolific romantic phase that navigated through the pandemic with live albums and nostalgic renditions from the 1980s and 1990s.
By 2023, the singer took the boldest step of his career at the Isaías Gravações studio in Iaçu: he released a fully original album titled "Pra maltratar os corações, Com amor lembro, choro e bebo" ("To Hurt the Hearts, With Love I Remember, Cry, and Drink"), bringing his rich discography to a total of five albums.
Roots, Inspirations, and Behind the Scenes
To understand the essence behind the melodies and the desires driving the independent cultural scene, here are the main highlights from a recent conversation with the songwriter:
1. What is your greatest musical influence and the song you listen to the most?
Dhan Nascimento:
"My favorite song to listen to is "Is This Love" by Bob Marley. He is my great inspiration in life and art".
2. How did your connection to music begin?
Dhan Nascimento:
"Since I was little, I was always deeply involved with music because I listened to the radio a lot. As time went on, I liked it more and more, and by high school, I formed my first musical project with friends. That’s where everything started taking shape".
3. What are the main obstacles faced by independent artists in the region?
Dhan Nascimento:
"Unfortunately, the biggest challenges local artists face are the persistent lack of real opportunities and the shortage of financial support for investments. Without sponsorship or initial backing, staying on the road becomes extremely difficult for anyone making art in our hometown".
4. Is there a song by another artist that you feel defines your identity?
Dhan Nascimento:
"The song that best represents me is "Criminalidade" by the great Edson Gomes. Besides being a work with very powerful lyrics and melody, it is completely timeless. Everything those lyrics denounced in the past is perfectly reflected in the present day".
5. Among all your releases, which works best define your evolution?
Dhan Nascimento:
"The work I identify with the most will always be my first. My first original song is called 'Preconceito Jamais' ("Prejudice Never"), released in 2013, and that was exactly when I discovered myself as a songwriter. But today, I have another milestone composition among many, called "Basta me Ligar" ("Just Call Me").
When I transitioned to the romantic genre, I wrote these lyrics, which I consider one of the best of my career. Wherever I perform, the audience always asks for it because it is such beautiful poetry".
6. How does your creative process work when composing?
Dhan Nascimento:
"What inspires me to write are specific moments and phases of life. Inspiration strikes hard, and I write at various times of the day—mostly before going to sleep, right when I wake up, or during the afternoon in those more introspective moments".
7. What is missing for Iaçu's talents to gain the visibility they deserve?
Dhan Nascimento:
"What would give local artists more visibility is more opportunities and real support with promotion and audio recordings. Not everyone has the financial means to pay for professional studio hours.
Additionally, the Department of Culture needs to be more impartial when selecting and hiring artists for local festivities, as all local musicians have their own audience and deserve opportunities without restrictions or favoritism".
8. What mass communication tool would be a game-changer for local culture?
Dhan Nascimento:
"A local radio station in our city, with a properly scheduled program reserved for local artists, would have a huge impact on our visibility.
We must remember that not everyone has full or frequent access to social media, and without traditional channels like the radio, a lot of great talent ends up going unnoticed".
